Editor's Note

The Institute of Biopharmaceutical and Health Engineering (iBHE) at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School has been actively expanding its global partnerships. Notably, iBHE and Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology) jointly established the "Joint Training and Exchange Program” for the Masters majoring in Evidence-Based Health Engineering. Since its launch in 2024, the two institutes have initiated a reciprocal exchange of students. Join us to see their insights and achievements from the program.

Wei Huiwen, a Master's student in the Evidence-Based Health Program (Class of 2023), has been engaged in a six-month academic exchange at Institute of Science Tokyo since November 2024. She is currently studying and conducting research on computer-aided diagnosis of pathological images in the research group of Professor Kenji Suzuki of the Institute of Integrated Research.

Professor Kenji Suzuki has been deeply involved in the fields of biomedical image processing and analysis and computer-aided diagnosis for years. He is an influential scholar in this field and has made many achievements. I am currently conducting research on computer-aided diagnosis based on pathological images. During this process, the professor and seniors in the group have given me a lot of help and support, shared with me the new progress in the group, and provided new ideas and suggestions on my research, which has benefited me a lot. It is worth mentioning that the scientific research atmosphere here does not "pursue a sense of busyness", but emphasizes "self-consistent rhythm" and "problem-oriented". Most members of the group focus on their own topics with strong independence while they are willing to communicate and share their scientific insights. The overall atmosphere of the laboratory is relaxed and harmonious. Whenever new students join and old students graduate, teachers and students in the group will get together to hold welcome and farewell parties to express blessings and support, which bring each other closer.

While advancing scientific research, I also completed two courses. The courses here emphasize "guided learning" and "knowledge construction". On the basis of theoretical knowledge explanation, many case introductions and application examples are introduced, combined with group discussions, allowing students to learn freely and think independently. After class, students are asked to summarize and ask questions about what they have learned in class through homework, and use the latest knowledge to solve practical problems. Feedbacks, in turn, will be given to students in the coming lectures. This interactive teaching model has gradually enabled me to complete the transition from passive learning to active exploration, from "accepting knowledge" to "making good use of knowledge", and learning has become more in-depth and more motivated.

During the exchange, I not only expanded my academic horizons, but also gained a lot of practice in foreign language speaking, communication, adaptation, and problem-solving abilities while facing complex environments alone. The advancement of scientific research has allowed me to deeply think about my major, thinking in the classroom has enhanced my understanding of "learning". Bits and pieces of life have taught me the way to stick to my own rhythm in a foreign place and establish a balanced and resilient state. The language barrier has gradually disappeared in active communication, and the unfamiliar city has become familiar in step-by-step exploration. In this process, I have learned to look at the world from a more open perspective and re-understand the true meaning of "international exchange": not only academic linkage, but also a renewal of mentality and ability.

TAO Hengyua Master's student in the Evidence-Based Health Program (Class of 2023), has been engaged in a six-month academic exchange at Institute of Science Tokyo since January 2025. She is currently studying iPSCs-related scientific research in Professor Shoen Kume's group at the institute of Life Science and Technology.

Kume-sensei's lab specializes in the field of inducing pancreatic cells from iPSCs. A field in which my research represented a new direction and posed initial language challenges, but the teachers and students provided me with a lot of help.

Unlike our labs in Tsinghua, there is no cell room and even basic buffers like PBS need to be prepared from powder etc. Fortunately, senior students patiently taught me every protocol step-by-step. Although those students are not good at English, they would use a translator to convert Japanese protocols into English for me and guide me through each experiment. Another mentor, Shiraki-sensei, whose desk next to the student benches, regularly works on weekends and holidays, making it easy for me to discuss any research problems. He has been invaluable in refining experimental designs and advising on reagent ordering.

In addition, the lab's rigorous attitude towards data management has benefited me greatly. The lab has its own office system, and all public equipment and private computers are connected to the system. Every instrument and workstation are linked to a central server: raw data uploads directly after each run, and any authorized computer on the lab’s Wi-Fi can access it instantly. In addition, personal experimental plans and presentation slides must be archived promptly in this system, which makes it easy to learn about other people's research. In addition, after entering the lab, you will receive an experiment notebook in which every procedure and result must be recorded in detail, with dates matching the online records. Although notebooks stay in the lab, anyone can freely consult them to learn established protocols.

Finally, I am deeply grateful to Tsinghua and my advisors for their support, giving me this opportunity to broaden my international vision and improve myself. I also hope my experience inspires more students to venture abroad and embrace the world.
